Musk's Wild Ride: Black Eyes, Brawls, and Billions Missed in D.C.
Musk's Wild Ride: Black Eyes, Brawls, and Billions Missed in D.C.
Elon Musk's foray into Washington D.C. was never going to be quiet. When the tech billionaire took the helm of the newly minted Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), he arrived with sky-high ambitions and a reputation for disruption. Promising colossal savings – initially a staggering $2 trillion, later scaled back to $1 trillion – Musk aimed to be a wrecking ball to federal bureaucracy. But his tumultuous tenure ended not with a triumphant bang, but with a literal black eye, a reported Oval Office brawl, and savings falling dramatically short of the astronomical promises.Big Promises, Sobering Reality
Musk dove in headfirst, wielding his DOGE authority to implement sweeping changes. Reports detailed mass layoffs and the shuttering of entire agencies as he sought to "bulldoze through" government inefficiency. By the time his departure neared in late May, Musk claimed roughly $160 billion in savings. While a massive figure by most standards, it paled in comparison to his initial $2 trillion pledge or even the revised $1 trillion goal. Critics were quick to pounce, labeling his cuts "indiscriminate" and warning of severe damage to vital programs.
The financial picture was murkier still. Nonpartisan researchers argued that much of Musk's claimed savings could be wiped out by subsequent costs: reinstating workers deemed illegally fired, mounting legal defense bills, and lost revenue streams (like a downsized IRS). This backlash wasn't just political noise; it reportedly took a tangible toll on Musk's personal reputation and even impacted his business empire, including Tesla.
The Explosive Exit: Bruises and Brawls
Musk's formal farewell in the Oval Office on May 30th presented a jarring contrast. President Trump offered a warm send-off, lauding the "colossal change" Musk had delivered and affectionately calling DOGE "his baby." Trump hinted Musk wouldn't vanish entirely, suggesting he'd be "back and forth." Musk himself framed his exit as the natural conclusion of his time as a "special government employee," vowing that DOGE's mission would persist as a "way of life" and promising continued consultation with Trump.
Yet, the subtext was thick with tension. Trump alluded to Musk enduring "the slings and the arrows," while Musk admitted DOGE had become a "bogeyman." Most visibly, Musk sported a prominent black eye. Dressed entirely in black, complete with a DOGE hat, he attributed the shiner to roughhousing with his 5-year-old son, recounting, "Go ahead, punch me in the face." The explanation did little to quell rampant online speculation.
The Oval Office Altercation
Behind the scenes, the atmosphere was even more volatile. Former Trump strategist Steve Bannon revealed a shocking incident to the Daily Mail: a physical confrontation between Musk and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent right near the Oval Office.
According to Bannon, the clash erupted when Bessent confronted Musk over DOGE's "meager savings," reportedly demanding: "You promised us a trillion dollars (in cuts), and now you’re at like $100 billion, and nobody can find anything, what are you doing?" Bannon claims this sparked Musk's physical reaction: "when Elon got physical... not an argument, it was a physical confrontation. Elon basically shoved him."
A witness allegedly described the scene as "two billionaire, middle-aged men thinking it was WWE in the hall of the West Wing." The shouting match reportedly escalated with Bessent yelling "F--- you!" repeatedly and Musk retorting, "I can’t hear you," and "Say it louder." The altercation allegedly began inside the Oval Office and spilled into the West Wing halls. Bannon asserted Trump sided decisively with Bessent afterward. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt downplayed it, stating, "Disagreements are a normal part of any healthy policy process" among passionate individuals.
Drug Allegations Resurface
Adding another layer of controversy on his departure day, the New York Times reported allegations that Musk had "frequently used drugs" – including ketamine, ecstasy, and psychedelic mushrooms – during his 2024 campaign efforts with Trump. The report noted it was unclear if this continued during his specific DOGE tenure. This built upon a January 2024 Wall Street Journal report alleging past use of LSD, cocaine, ecstasy, and mushrooms.
When a reporter attempted to question Musk about these campaign-era allegations during the Oval Office event, Musk, standing behind the President, deflected. He criticized the Times's reporting on another matter and curtly stated, "Let’s move on." Musk has previously acknowledged using prescription ketamine for depression and a "small amount" "once every other week," along with "almost never" using marijuana. The Times report suggested his ketamine use might be frequent enough to cause bladder issues.
Distancing and a Complex Legacy
This wasn't Musk's only White House clash. Trump reportedly "turned on" Musk during a separate March blow-up with Secretary of State Marco Rubio over DOGE's "mass firings," leading Trump to announce plans to "rein in" Musk's cost-cutting.
As his chaotic D.C. chapter closed, the world's richest man signaled a retreat from the political fray. He indicated plans to spend "a lot less" on political campaigns and publicly criticized Trump's top legislative priority, arguing it would balloon the deficit and "undermine the work" of his DOGE team.
Elon Musk's stint as the efficiency czar was a whirlwind of audacious goals, harsh realities, intense criticism, and surreal drama – from a mysterious black eye and resurfaced drug claims to an alleged billionaire brawl steps from the Resolute Desk. While he formally stepped away, vowing DOGE's work would continue, his legacy in Washington is etched in controversy: a tale of colossal promises that collided head-on with the messy realities of governing, leaving behind savings far short of the target and a trail of unforgettable headlines.
